Saturday, 26/7/08 - Day 23

Competition Day - Junior Worlds

Hi Guys, the second day of racing commenced today. An early start this morning with three groups leaving the accommodation at different times, the K1 Men (Josh, Ben and Joey) leaving first at 8:00 (they are the only ones racing today), followed by the girls; Natasha, Antra and Ashleigh at 7:30 (racing after C1).

Joey was the first Aussie boat off and he pulled off a fast clean run. He was followed by Josh with two touches and dropping low on 14. Ben was the final Aussie boat off, a fast run but two touches. After 1st runs the boys were placed; Joey 23rd, Ben 34th and Josh 51st position.

The second runs were upon us and the boys new what they need to do; Joey led off and had a quick run, only a second slower than his first run but picked up 2 touches on the way down the course. Josh Kippin followed with a quick run with a 102 plus a touch, would it be enough to get him to the semi final. Ben Horlyck was the last of the Aussie boys to paddle, he was doing well on the top section of the course with only a single touch at gate 6, but something when wrong in the lower section of the course and he missed a gate 104 and he had to re-circ to get the gate, this additional time would prove costly. At the end of the mens K1, Joey and Josh made the cut to the semi-final in position 32 and 37 respectively but unfortunately Ben missed the semi cut coming in 44th.

The Teams runs for the Mens K1 will be later this after noon….

The boys headed off at 3:40 for the first run of 2 runs for teams…the time was OK but to many touches down the course, 6 touches added an additional 12 secs to their 1st run time giving them a time of 132.57 sec. Place in 15th position after 1st run.

The boys had a much better second run with only with a total of 3 touches. The final position in KM Teams was 11th.

A few hours break, the course was closed and a number of gate modification where made to the course in preparation for the Semi Finals and Finals tomorrow. Demonstration runs commenced at 6:45 and was over within 30 minutes. All the athletes doing semi-finals in the morning walked the course with the courses before departing for our accommodation and video review of the demonstration runs.
